HOFLA Posters | DIE Week 3 - Project 3

This week's project was one of the most important I have done to this time, the main reason being that it was for a real client, and also, it was a group project.

The assignment was this: Heart of Florida Legal Aid Society, Inc., has hired us (my classmates and me) to create a series of posters for internal display and possibly for display throughout the community. The series of posters should stand together as an obvious group when presented together, or stand as compelling messages when displayed individually.

This assignment required:
  • Brainstorming for ideas, research, and agree upon a format with the group doing the posters.
  • Posting rough designs, receiving feedback from the group, and altering the design until the group agrees that it's ready for the final submission.
  • Offer the same feedback to different designers in the group, that way they can improve their roughs.
  • Submit the final piece.
BUT, WHO IS THE CLIENT? WHAT IS HOFLA?

From their website
Heart of Florida Legal Aid Society is a nonprofit law firm providing free civil legal assistance to low-income communities and individuals in the Tenth Judicial Circuit of Florida. Our service area includes Polk, Hardee, and Highlands counties.

Their services include:
  • Family Law.
    • Divorce where minor children are involved.
    • Child Support.
    • Paternity and Custody.
  • Domestic violence.
    • Representation for survivors seeking injunctions for protection and other civil relief.
  • Immigration Law.
    • Relief under the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA).
    • U-Visas.
    • T-Visas.
    • Delayed Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
    • Other forms of humanitarian immigration assistance.
  • Pro se Legal Assistance.
  • Housing and Consumer Issues.
    • Landlord Tenant.
    • Discrimination.
    • Foreclosure Defense.
    • Negotiations related to debt repayment.
I came up with two designs, as I created three different roughs at first, as I was receiving feedback and applying changes, I down my roughs to two, and finally I created two nice designs. I just couldn't decide between one and the other.

Both of these pieces we're made thinking about people that's been victims of human trafficking, as HOFLA offers Immigration Law assistance (T-Visas).

I thought this was a good image to represent when someone is taken from somewhere by force. I wanted to focus on giving hope and making people know there are organizations willing to help them have a future, without asking for just amounts of money. People who care about people. The message "Freedom is everyone's right", means that human beings are not an object to possess. Selling and owning humans is not ok.

I chose to use a monochrome image because it evokes emotions that a color photo can't.

In this piece I chose a bright image, to give a bright message.

This photo represents freedom, and hope.

I chose to use the word survivor instead of victim because it gives the person, after being through so much, a sense of dignity, respect, and empowerment.

On the technical side, both designs were done in Adobe Photoshop. Both are symmetrical compositions, I applied effects like drop shadows to the text, and the contact info box and used some strong colors that represent courage (red) and blue (trust and peace).

This project was really challenging, having to work with others is a little bit difficult when just having online communication (but these days a lot of things are done online, so better get used to it). Also, having to get group approval takes time and dedication, you have to attend to different opinions and suggestions, but overall I feel this assignment provided me an opportunity to create something different, something more meaningful, and having to work as a group provided me with different perspectives, which makes me create and design better.
