Adobe Sensei | DIE Week 3 - Post 1

Photoshop User Magazine by KelbyOne it's a great source of information, tutorials, and tips for Photoshop and Lightroom. This time I read in the September 2021 edition an article I found interesting called Bow To Your Sensei by Scott Valentine that talks about an Adobe robot (AI).

What is Sensei?

Adobe Sensei is a predictive intelligence that Adobe employs in its software, such as Photoshop, and marketing tools in the Experience Cloud. This AI aims to mimic human thinking and decision-making, and it does so through a technique called "machine learning" (ML).

Machine learning is a way of teaching computers to recognize patterns and make sense of large amounts of data. When you see personalized recommendations on social media, streaming services, or online stores, it's because the computer has learned from your past choices. The more you interact with a certain type of content or product, the better the system becomes at understanding your preferences. In simpler terms, it's like training your computer to understand what you like and don't like.

This same concept is applied to image editing and manipulation. Adobe established Sensei to pay attention to the user behaviors that answer questions like "How are portraits typically retouched?" or "What's the difference between sky and subject?". While we can express our thoughts about these subjects using words, computers rely on mathematics. It's our job is to help computers understand human perception by performing the same tasks repeatedly on various images.

"Adobe doesn’t peek over your shoulder while you’re working unless you specifically opt into their voluntary programs.* And should you choose to volunteer to participate, Adobe keeps strict governance over how those images are used and shared internally, with very limited access. Most of Sensei actually runs on your local machine, with only a few features requiring an Internet connection for cloud processing."

Lightroom uses Sensei tools in the Camera Raw feature, offering functions like:

• Super resolution: allows you to increase any image size by up to four times.
• Raw details: increases color depth and detail without increasing the linear dimensions of the image.
• Auto tone: adjust exposure, brightness, contrast, and black levels automatically.

In Photoshop, the list of AI-enhanced features is imposing. You can find tools like:
