Photography in Graphic Design | DP Week 1 - Post 1

A graphic designer can work in many design branches like web design, environmental design, illustration, advertisement, animation, game design, type design, and many more. Most of these branches make use of photography.

WHY IS PHOTOGRAPHY SO IMPORTANT IN GRAPHIC DESIGN?

There are several reasons for this:

• Communication: photography is a visual medium, and graphic designers must of the time work with visual elements to communicate direct messages and convey ideas. Before photography, illustration was used, but since photography surfaced we can capture the emotional component. When the designer understands photography, it's easier to appreciate the visual language, compositions, and aesthetics. 
• Image selection: a graphic designer often needs an image for a design project. With knowledge of what photography implies, they can understand how to capture or select appropriate images that align with the objectives and style of the project.
• Image editing: manipulating an image is a common task that always comes after taking and selecting the right images. To be able to edit them you have to understand color correction, retouching, photo enhancement, and more.
• Collaboration: if a graphic designer wants to collaborate with a photographer, knowing the terminology and techniques allows effective communication, and ensures that the produced images align with the design brief ideas and vision.
• Concept development: photography can be a source of inspiration. Designers who have knowledge of photography can draw ideas from different styles, and techniques, which allows them to develop unique and innovative design concepts.
• Brand consistency: for businesses or brands, visual consistency is essential. A designer who knows photography can contribute to maintaining a consistent visual identity, capturing images that align with the brand's style and values.

There is also another essential reason why photography is important for a graphic designer if it's a beginner or just wants to keep things on a budget when you want a specific image for a project, you can sure find a lot on the internet, you can try stock photos, but some have expensive prices, here is where knowing about photography serves you, allowing you to know to capture, select, and edit your own photographs, you just have to invest some money in decent equipment, it's not necessary to buy the latest model of a camera of a cellphone either. Also, you have to invest time to do your planning and shooting.

Photography plays a big role in graphic design because it helps communicate ideas and evoke emotions with just an image. With photography, you can add depth and interest to a design. It also enables the designer to work well with photographers and other professionals in the creative industry.
