Lakeland Postcards | DIE Week 1 - Project 1

As my first project for my Digital Image Editing course, I had to pretend I was hired by the City of Lakeland, Florida to create a series of postcards, to promote the city.

As I'm a little new to the city I didn't know what my theme could be, I thought a lot about it and realized museums are not usually visited by people, there are places more often visited around the city, like the lakes and parks.

This city has some interesting museums, of which I chose these 5:

Florida Air Museum: formerly known as the International Sport Aviation Museum and the SUN 'n FUN Air Museum, is a nonprofit institution dedicated to bringing aerospace and aviation history and science alive for people of all ages and backgrounds.

Polk County History Center & Genealogical Library: this museum has a collection that includes natural and cultural objects related to Polk and the greater Central Florida area that represent their history from pre-Columbian to present-day eras.

Bing Rooming House Museum: Plant City Janie L. Bing Rooming House, a National Historical Site anchoring the former Historic Laura Street African American District, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, for its role as a domestic hotel for people of color during the period of segregation.

Plant City Photo Archives: this museum houses a collection of over 100,000 historical photographs, negatives, and documents that reflect the history of our region. Our archive of original and digitized materials is available for the public to access freely.

Robert W. Willaford Railroad Museum: this museum displays and maintains a very sizable collection of railroad memorabilia, including their best know item, a completely restored Seaboard Air line, no. 5735 Caboose that was built in 1963. Also, you will find a 1942 Whitcomb Locomotive.

For the process of this project, I had to put a lot of thought into the theme, and then I took my own pictures which took more time than I expected. After that, I selected the images I liked and started editing. I played with filters, and frames, corrected some things that in the original photos I didn't like and I got my five postcards. I think I left the audience wide open because I believe museums can be enjoyed by everyone, whether you are a kid or an adult, and also these 5 museums all focus on the history of different things.

This assignment, as I needed my own photos, reminded me that planning is essential, what is your subject, what kind of photos you want, what time of the day is best to take the photos, how could I edit this photo, where some of the questions I asked myself before starting. It's not difficult but it takes time, so patience is important.

Which of these museums would you like to visit?
