Trying Lettering | GDT Week 1 - Post 2
DID YOU KNOW THAT EVERYONE WAS BORN A GENIUS?
Albert Einstein once said, “Every child is born a genius”. And he was not wrong. Now, you might be wondering:
What does being a genius actually mean? And, what happened to the genius in me?
According to Collins Dictionary, "a genius is a highly talented, creative, or intelligent person".
Some researchers say that we don’t function at genius level because we are not aware of how smart and creative, we really are. When we are kids, the education system can “dumb us down”. That’s when we start losing our abilities and with them, the genius in ourselves. If we train our minds and dedicate time to develop ourselves in the areas we like or want, we can grow in strength. We can be geniuses.
A simple way to improve our skills is to start practicing a short creative exercise every day, for 10-15 minutes a day you will be doing something to train your mind and abilities.
I consider myself a creative person, but I wish I could get more ideas flowing in my mind in an easier way, I wish I could be more creative...So to achieve that, I´ll be practicing different creative exercises from now on...
I'll tell you about one I recently did: lettering practice. The idea of this exercise is to practice hand-lettering by choosing a meaningful word or phrase.
Lettering is an art form, the written or printed letters act as an illustration, and each letter is written with a lot of attention put into the details. For me, lettering is a whole new level, more now that I don’t use pen and paper on a daily basis (more of a laptop). For this exercise, I looked for some ideas on the internet, and some practice sheets, and I came across one that looked cute and easy for my hand (because I've never tried lettering before I have to say), so I printed it out, chose some color pens and started writing. And this is the result I got:

After doing this practice I realized that lettering is more difficult than I anticipated, I had the idea to write a piece of a song using the technique, but I quitted. I also realized that if I want to continue with lettering, I will need some cool brush pens! You are invited to try it!
Having the idea that a genius can be born and made gives me the motivation to keep practicing some other cool and creative exercises. On the internet, you will find a lot of ideas for short exercises about different categories to try. If you are a designer, you could do some collages, pattern creation, abstract art, storyboarding, character design, and much more!
Will you try some? Want to be a genius?
