Brainstorming | GDT Week 4 - Post 2

I did this last week's creative exercise in class, with the help of my classmates.

“You've been asked to figure out what goes inside a Happy Meal in the times of pirates, said our teacher.

He wanted quantity, not quality. We came up with ideas like, a toy sword, gold, ships, and more. Between 4 people, in 3 minutes, we got around 16 different ideas. Not bad If compared to the last time we tried that in class, we had way more time, and didn’t get as many results.

This exercise is called brainstorming.

Brainstorming is an easy and creative way of generating ideas that could be solutions to different problems.

“Brainstorming combines a relaxed, informal approach to problem-solving with lateral thinking. It encourages people to come up with thoughts and ideas that can, at first, seem a bit crazy”.

Brainstorming is really useful, and effective, way more when you use it the correct way.

How to use the tool?

  • Prepare the group: choose an appropriate/comfortable meeting space, consider who will attend, and take notes on digital tools like Miro, or with pen a paper.
  • Present the problem: define the problem you want to solve in the clearest way possible. Give people plenty of time to generate their ideas, and then ask them to share the ideas.
  • Guide the discussion: if you’re the group’s facilitator, share the ideas you have, but spend more time supporting your team and guiding them through the discussion.
The next time you feel stuck with a problem, you should try brainstorming for fresh ideas.
